AU Commission Chairperson Rejects Somaliland Recognition, Warns of “Dangerous Precedent” for Africa. ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H. E.
Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has firmly rejected any attempts to recognize Somaliland as an independent state, terming such initiatives as a “dangerous precedent “for the continent.
In a statement issued on December 23, 2025, the Chairperson emphasized that Somaliland remains an integral and inseparable part of the Federal Republic of Somalia. Youssouf cited the Constitutive Act of the African Union and the 1964 decision of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) as the basis for his stance, emphasizing the respect for borders inherited at independence.
Officials commented on the matter. “
The territorial integrity of member states is non — negotiable, and any attempt to recognize Somaliland as independent is against the fundamental principles of the African Union.”
The Chairperson warned that any such recognition could have severe consequences for Somalia’s sovereignty and could potentially destabilize the entire region.
He cautioned against setting a precedent that might encourage similar actions in other African nations, leading to fragmentation and further conflicts. Youssouf expressed the African Union’s unwavering commitment to the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Somalia.
He pledged the Commission’s full support to the Somali authorities in their efforts to consolidate peace, strengthen state institutions, and advance inclusive governance.
Regional officials and independent observers have echoed the Chairperson’s concerns, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region. They have urged all parties involved to engage in dialogue and find a peaceful resolution to the issue.
Further details on the response from the Somali government and international community are expected in the coming days.
