Cotonou, Benin — Attempted Coup in Benin Viewed as Regional Wake-up Call.
The UN Security Council was briefed on the attempted coup in Benin, which occurred earlier this month, with officials describing it as a symptom of broader institutional weaknesses in West Africa.
According to local reports, the swift intervention by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) helped prevent the takeover.
However, UN and Beninese officials highlighted that the incident underscores the need for governance reforms and increased transparency. Barrie Freeman, Deputy Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel, emphasized the importance of inclusive governance reforms, stating, “Experience across the region shows that governance reforms perceived as exclusionary erode legitimacy and fuel popular discontent.”Freeman further noted the timing of the coup attempt, which is just weeks before the scheduled presidential and legislative elections in early 2026.
Marc Hermanne Gninadoou Araba, Benin’s Ambassador to the UN, echoed these sentiments, stating that the attempted coup is part of a regional context characterized by persistent institutional weakness. “
The event of the 7th of December must not be analyzed in isolation, “Araba. “They form part of a regional context marked by persistent institutional weakness, in which the prevention of disruptions to the constitutional order remains a major collective challenge.”.
Benin’s President Patrice Talon, however, denied that the events of December 7th constituted a coup attempt, instead calling it an “attack” by ‘thugs and small-time terrorists encouraged by a few marginal political actors.
‘Talon acknowledged the support from Nigeria in launching two airstrikes to neutralize the plotters, who had barricaded themselves in a base in Cotonou. He also mentioned that some leaders fled across the border and that Benin has requested their extradition.
The attempted coup has led to the arrest of approximately 30 individuals, mostly soldiers, who are currently being held in detention ahead of their trial.
The incident has raised concerns about the stability of the region, with regional officials and UN representatives calling for a comprehensive approach to governance and institutional reforms. Further details regarding the investigation and any potential reforms are expected to be released in the coming days.
