RABAT, Morocco — The appeal trial for 18 Senegalese football fans, detained since the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) final, convenes today in Rabat. The supporters, accused of hooliganism and property damage, have been held since January 18, 2026. Their health conditions have raised alarm among their families in Senegal.
The ASC Lebougui Dangou de Rufisque association reports that several fans are “gravely ill “and are struggling to receive proper medical care. Their calls for help have been ignored, and some have refused medical treatment, according to the association. The situation has led to warnings of potential deaths if urgent action is not taken.
The incident followed Senegal’s 1-0 victory over Morocco in the CAN final, which was followed by clashes outside the Rabat stadium. In the first instance, nine fans were sentenced to one year in prison and a fine, while others received lighter sentences but remain detained.
Today’s verdict will determine whether the supporters are released, have their sentences reduced, or remain in prison. The case also has diplomatic implications, as the CAN 2025 final decision, which saw the Confederation of African Football (CAF) award the title to Morocco, is being challenged in the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
