However, the revival of diplomatic ties has been largely driven by Algerian security officials, who have played a pivotal role in maintaining and rekindling relations between the neighbors.
In October 2025, a French minister was appointed with a mandate that includes reviving security and migration cooperation between the two countries.
The official is expected to visit Algiers in the coming days, further signaling the commitment to the renewed dialogue.
The two countries are also engaged in low — key discussions aimed at gradually restoring diplomatic relations.
Despite these efforts, the path to a full restoration is still complex, with various obstacles remaining. Among the most significant is the planning for a papal visit to Algeria, which would be the first of its kind.
The visit is anticipated to take place before mid — 2026.
Additionally, the future of a French car manufacturer’s factory in Oran, Algeria, is under scrutiny.
The facility has been operating at a limited capacity, which some observers suggest may indicate an impending end to the company’s presence in the country.
In a separate development, the head of a French shipping and logistics company has visited Algiers, where he is scheduled to sign several deals with President Tebboune.
This visit comes in the wake of France’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over a disputed territory and President Macron’s recent trip to Morocco, which may impact the discussions between France and Algeria.
Furthermore, Algeria and France are set to discuss revising an autonomy plan for the disputed territory, which was first proposed in 2007.
