LIBREVILLE, Gabon (AGP) – Alain Claude Bilie-By-Nze, the president of Ensemble pour le Gabon (EPG), has called for a comprehensive rewrite of the nationality law reform ordinance during a press conference in Libreville on April 1, 2026. Bilie-By-Nze expressed his support for the principle of reforming the law to establish “clear conditions “for acquiring Gabonese nationality. However, he criticized the February 26, 2026, presidential ordinance, arguing that it creates distinctions between citizens that were not present in the original 1962 law.
Bilie — By-Nze emphasized that the proposed changes undermine the equality of all Gabonese citizens as stated in the 1962 law. He also contended that the urgency cited for the ordinance’s implementation does not justify the alterations, given the gravity of the issue. The EPG leader called on authorities to rewrite the code in a straightforward manner while seeking consensus.
The recent presidential ordinance, which revises the nationality code, is in line with recommendations from the latest national dialogue in Angondjé. It introduces distinctions between citizens based on “origin, adoption, “or “affiliation.”paragraph: The call for a rewrite and consensus on the nationality law reform comes amidst ongoing debate over the proposed changes, which some argue could have significant implications for the country’s social fabric.
