Bamako, Mali — A massive and coordinated coup attempt in Mali was thwarted on April 25, 2026, according to the Africa Corps, a Russian-linked paramilitary group.
The Africa Corps reported that between 10,000 and 12,000 fighters, believed to be aligned with the Front for the Liberation of Africa (FLA) and the al-Qaeda-linked Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), targeted key military and government sites across several cities, including the capital, Bamako.
The situation in Mali has been volatile, with a complex security landscape involving separatist movements, jihadist groups, and a military junta that took power in 2020.
The Africa Corps attributed the attacks to the FLA and a Saharan affiliate of Al — Qaeda, as well as the involvement of “Ukrainian mercenaries “and support from Western intelligence agencies. These claims have not been independently verified. Despite the Africa Corps’assertions of control, there were reports that rebels had seized control of parts of Kidal.
The Malian military, however, stated that the situation was ‘under control’by Saturday evening, suggesting that they had neutralized the attackers.
The long — term implications of the coup attempt for Mali’s political stability and security situation are uncertain.
The involvement of various factions, including separatist movements and jihadist groups, along with the presence of foreign military contractors, adds layers of complexity to the situation.
As Mali grapples with the aftermath of the coup attempt, the international community will be watching closely to see how the situation unfolds.
The challenges ahead are substantial, and the path to stability and security remains uncertain.
