[ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA] The Sidama people of Ethiopia celebrate Fiche Chambalala, their New Year festival, which marks a blend of cultural heritage and community spirit. Held on Qawaado, the first day of the Sidama week, the event was marked by its unique blend of social and spiritual significance on March 15, 2026.
Abebe Marimo, the Deputy Head of the Sidmama Regional Culture, Tourism and Sports Bureau, highlights the festival’s role as a unifying force: “Fiche Chambalala transcends cultural events, serving as a moment of unity and shared purpose, bridging divisions and fostering a collective future.” The festival’s origins are tied to Ficho, a legendary Sidama woman known for her generosity.
The festival is anchored by the wisdom of Ayanto elders, who meticulously observe lunar cycles and celestial events to set the festival’s dates. Ayele Adato Yuma, reflecting on the festival, notes its historical significance: “Fiche Chambalala is a vibrant tapestry of history, where indigenous knowledge and cultural identity are woven together.”.
Recognized by UNESCO on its Intangible Cultural Heritage List, the festival is celebrated for its social practices, rituals, performing arts, and indigenous knowledge systems. Its global recognition underscores its role in promoting understanding and peace.
Preparations for the festival begin well in advance, with the community working together to organize resources and ensure readiness. Elders lead fasting periods, and practical preparations include gathering firewood and repairing homes.
The culinary contributions are led by women, who prepare traditional dishes like burisame, while men focus on cultural attire and tools. The festival is a communal effort that reflects the Sidama’s cultural identity and craftsmanship.
The festival’s events include Fixaari Barra, the Huluka ceremony, and the Safo ritual, where burisame and milk are shared. Children sing greetings, adults perform blessing rituals, and traditional dances unite generations.
Abebe Marimo emphasizes the need to preserve the festival’s authenticity: “As it gains international acclaim, our duty is to protect its cultural integrity and uphold its values.” The festival also promotes reconciliation, with a focus on women, children, and environmental stewardship.
Fiche Chambalala serves as a social bond, reinforcing family and community ties. It fosters peace, love, forgiveness, and compassion, reminding participants of their interconnectedness with nature.
Despite modernization challenges, the festival endures, thanks to efforts to preserve its customs and traditions. Abebe Marimo underscores the importance of these efforts: “Fiche Chambalala is a time for unity, peace, and the celebration of our shared humanity.”.
