Africa Newsroom — Gaza family seeks medical evacuation hope as cancer-stricken boy undergoes treatment in Italy
Gaza Strip, December 12, 2023 — A 10-year-old boy from Gaza, diagnosed with cancer, has been evacuated to Italy for treatment, leaving his family hoping to reunite with him through a potential medical transplant process.
The young boy, Abdullah, is one of thousands who have been evacuated from Gaza due to the devastation of the region’s health sector, which has been exacerbated by ongoing conflicts. Since October 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) has evacuated over 7,600 patients from Gaza, two-thirds of whom are children, according to WHO data.
Abdullah’s family is now considering joining him in Italy, but this depends on whether they are a match for a transplant. The closure of the Rafah crossing has complicated medical evacuations, as seen in the case of Ahmad, a 9-year-old who required multiple surgeries after suffering a severe head injury. Despite being approved for medical evacuation, Ahmad’s family struggled to secure funding for his treatment abroad, highlighting the challenges faced by many families in Gaza.
Medical evacuations from Gaza have been necessary due to the inadequate healthcare facilities in the region. The WHO has appealed to foreign governments to cover the costs of these evacuations, as seen in the case of HEAL Palestine, which facilitated the largest single medical evacuation of injured children from Gaza.
The family’s situation underscores the broader challenges faced by Gaza’s population, including malnutrition, which can further complicate recovery for those awaiting or recovering from treatment.
According to experts, the potential for a medical transplant to reunite Abdullah with his family offers hope amidst the difficult circumstances. However, the process is complex and requires careful consideration of compatibility and medical risks.
