Cotonou, Benin — Niger is facing a severe food security crisis in the regions of Tillabéry, Diffa, Tahoua, and Dosso, as reported by the Famine Early Warning System Network (FEWS NET).
The situation, which is classified under Phase 3 of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), is expected to persist from April to September 2026. Persistent conflicts in the region are displacing populations, disrupting livelihoods, and affecting markets, thereby exacerbating food insecurity.
The high cost of food items has surpassed the purchasing power of displaced individuals and host communities, leading to a limited access to food resources and a reduction in the number of meals consumed daily.
As the crisis deepens, the number of households in Phase 3 of the IPC is anticipated to rise between June and September 2026.
A proportion of 5 percent could potentially escalate to Phase 4, indicating a more severe level of emergency.
The situation is further compounded by the impact of global events, such as the conflict in the Middle East, which has led to an increase in the cost of imported goods and fertilizers.
However, the immediate effect on market prices has not been severe due to Niger’s status as a producer of petroleum and its diverse sources of imported products. Security conditions have also deteriorated, with an increase in incidents leading to population displacement and market disruptions.
The IPC analysis, based on information available as of 22 April 2026, indicates a need for continued monitoring and response efforts.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations are actively monitoring the situation and working to provide assistance to those displaced and affected by the insecurity.
The urgency of the situation calls for immediate action and sustained support to ensure that the most vulnerable populations do not suffer further.
