In a landmark development, Chinese automaker Jetour has unveiled its intention to establish a production hub in South Africa for its T1 and T2 SUV models.
The Rosslyn plant in Pretoria, once a Nissan facility, has been acquired by Jetour’s parent company, Chery Automobile, marking a significant step for the South African automotive industry. This strategic decision is poised to inject fresh momentum into the local sector, aiming to create over 3,000 jobs and produce an estimated 50,000 vehicles annually by mid-2027.
The success of Jetour’s T1 and T2 models in the South African market, with over 4,500 units sold, has been a catalyst for this expansion, positioning the region as a key market for the company.
The Rosslyn plant, equipped with state — of-the-art facilities, is scheduled for retrofitting to cater to Jetour’s production requirements. Willem van de Putte of iol. Co.
Za has noted that Chery has outlined plans for the plant, including the potential for a hybrid bakkie, codenamed KP31, powered by a 2. 5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine.
The process of supplier localization is already underway, though it is expected to take time to fully establish. This move is not only beneficial for Jetour but also for the South African economy, aiming to expand the local manufacturing base and stimulate job creation. While the expansion raises questions about the potential impact on the existing automotive industry, it is also seen as an opportunity for innovation and market improvement.
The project is expected to contribute to the country’s strategic goals for economic development and industrialization.
As Jetour prepares to set up its local manufacturing operations, the South African automotive industry is poised for a transformative era.
The collaboration between a Chinese manufacturer and a local plant could pave the way for further international partnerships and investments in the sector, with the success of this venture closely watched by local and international stakeholders.
