UNICEF Report: South Sudan’s Humanitarian Crisis Intensifies Amid Conflict and Deteriorating Access. COUNTRY: South Sudan.
The humanitarian situation in South Sudan has reached critical levels, according to the latest report from the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Renewed hostilities since December 2025 have displaced over 280,000 people in Jonglei alone, with the crisis spilling over into Upper Nile, Lakes, and Central Equatoria states.
The report, issued on February 28, 2026, highlights the resurgence of cholera cases, with 98,507 cases and 1,627 deaths reported nationwide.
The nutrition situation remains dire, with children facing significant protection risks, and school disruptions persist, affecting up to 180,000 children without access to education. NUT GRAF: The deteriorating access to humanitarian aid has been exacerbated by the destruction, looting, or forced suspension of health and nutrition facilities, with 134 access incidents recorded in January and February 2026.
The provisional Humanitarian Action for Children (HAC) appeal for 2026 is only 30% funded, leaving urgent needs unmet.
The report details the impact of the ongoing conflict on the population, with 5 million children in need of humanitarian assistance and 9. 3 million people facing the same need. Over 650,000 children are at risk of severe acute malnutrition, and 2 million internally displaced people are struggling to survive.
The situation is further compounded by the economic challenges, with the South Sudanese pound losing significant value and inflation soaring. Climate shocks, such as heavy rains and droughts, have destroyed crops and livestock, depleting food reserves and exacerbating food insecurity.
As of late April 2026, only 22% of the required funding for the humanitarian appeal has been secured, presenting a major obstacle to critical interventions.
The World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF have warned that without immediate action, the situation could spiral out of control, leading to a full-blown famine. KICKER: As South Sudan edges closer to a humanitarian catastrophe, the international community is called upon to respond with urgency, providing critical aid to save the lives of millions and prevent a disaster of biblical proportions.
