Sunday Times Editor Makhudu Sefara Denies Corruption Allegations Amid SIU Investigation. JOHANNESBURG – Makhudu Sefara, the editor of the Sunday Times, has robustly denied corruption claims, refuting the allegations levelled against him by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU).
The SIU had implicated Sefara in relation to the National Lotteries Commission (NLC), amid a probe into the alleged misuse of lottery funds.
The SIU disclosed on April 28, 2026, that it had retrieved R3. 2 million associated with two non-profit companies – Todi Media Development Foundation NPC and Zibsiflo NPC – both of which are connected to Khuto Daniel Makwela. Makwela reportedly admitted to misusing funds and signed an Acknowledgement of Debt (AOD).
The SIU alleged a scheme where NLC funds intended for community upliftment were misappropriated for personal gains and property purchases. Todi Media Development Foundation NPC reportedly received R1. 5 million for media development, while Zibsiflo NPC was granted R1.
71 million for a women’s clinic in the Free State.
The SIU revealed that after Todi Media received its funds in 2018, R550,000 was allegedly paid to Unscripted Communication, in which Sefara is a director. Sefara dismissed the accusations, emphasizing that the event meant for media development was indeed carried out as planned. He recounted being approached by the head of Todi NPO, Daniel Makwela, in 2018, to organize a community media training event, which he asserts took place on December 10, with over 50 members of the community media sector in attendance.
Sefara decried the allegations as preposterous, arguing that if his company is guilty, then the venue, transport company, and airline are equally liable. He accused the SIU of grandstanding, noting the lack of communication before publicizing the allegations.
As investigations continue, Sefara has been placed on special leave.
