Mogadishu, Somalia — The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has issued a critical appeal for $27 million to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in Somalia, where an estimated 4. 8 million people are in dire need of assistance.
The appeal, aimed at providing essential sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services and combating gender-based violence (GBV), highlights the country’s multifaceted challenges, including recurrent droughts, floods, ongoing conflict, and economic shocks. Despite the urgency, only 19% of the required funds have been secured as of April 2026.
The situation is particularly dire for pregnant and lactating women, with 300,000 at heightened risk of pregnancy-related complications due to food insecurity and malnutrition. Access to SRH services is severely limited, with only 32% of births attended by skilled health personnel and 19% of public health facilities fully functional. UNFPA’s efforts to deliver life-saving assistance across 14 districts of Somalia are facing significant hurdles due to the insufficient funding.
The organization’s appeal underscores the need for immediate and increased financial support to prevent the reduction or interruption of critical SRH and GBV interventions, which are vital for the survival and well-being of thousands of Somalis.
