A massive fire struck the village of Tucunde in the Caravela Sector of Bolama/Bijagós Region on Caravela Island, Guinea-Bissau, on March 24th, 2026. This northernmost island in the Bijagós Archipelago, located in the Atlantic Ocean roughly 37 kilometers from the mainland, was the site of the tragedy. The fire, which raged through the village, resulted in the complete destruction of 23 houses, impacting 67 households and approximately 469 individuals.
The disaster has left the community reeling, particularly those who depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. The complete loss of warehouses filled with harvested produce and seeds for the next growing season has caused severe livelihood challenges for the affected community members. With many residents practicing polygamy, the displacement has disproportionately affected families and children, putting them at risk of deteriorating living conditions and potential hunger.
In response to this crisis, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has activated a Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) operation. This initiative is designed to provide immediate support to the affected families by offering shelter, food, medical care, and assistance in restoring their means of subsistence. The Red Cross is working in close coordination with local authorities and other stakeholders to ensure a coordinated and effective emergency response to the fire’s aftermath.
