Lilongwe, Malawi — A comprehensive Food System Assessment has been conducted in Malawi’s Mangochi and Mchinji districts, aimed at bolstering food security and promoting sustainable diets. The study, supported by Concern Worldwide and commissioned by Welthungerhilfe (WHH), employs a Market System Development (MSD) approach to examine local food systems and identify key areas for improvement.
The assessment, which delves into the intricate workings of food systems in the two districts, seeks to align national — level goals for food system transformation with practical, district-level initiatives. It aims to foster collective action that drives sub-national change and has positive spillover effects across interconnected systems.
Key findings of the report reveal potential leverage points in selected food markets, offering a roadmap for enhancing system functionality, resilience, and inclusivity. The study underscores the importance of addressing both structural and behavioral aspects of local food systems to ensure sustainable healthy diets for all residents.
