JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — A 51-year-old police administrative clerk from Bothaville, Mokete Elizabeth Dikoko, and a 36-year-old man, Elias Moloi, were arraigned in the Bothaville Magistrate’s Court on charges related to the attempted sale of four stolen lion cubs.
The trio, which included a 14-year-old minor, was apprehended on Thursday during a sting operation following a tip-off regarding an illicit lion cub sale.
The lion cubs, which authorities confirmed were stolen, were recovered and returned to their legitimate owner in Viljoenskroon. Dikoko, who is attached to the Bothaville SAPS, was granted bail but is facing internal disciplinary proceedings.
The minor was referred to the Department of Social Development. Both Dikoko and Moloi are charged under the Environmental Management Biodiversity Act.
