The Centre for Natural Resource Governance (CNRG) has submitted a formal petition to the Parliament of Zimbabwe, seeking immediate action against the escalating environmental destruction, public health risks, and human rights violations associated with mining activities in Boterekwa, Shurugwi. The petition, based on Sections 59 and 149 of the Zimbabwean Constitution, echoes the distressing experiences of local communities who are disproportionately affected by the unregulated mining practices in the area.
Despite the presence of regulatory bodies such as the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development and the Environmental Management Agency, the mining operations in Boterekwa have reportedly not adhered to environmental and legal standards. The CNRG has highlighted that communities have raised significant concerns, including severe environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity, hazardous dust pollution leading to respiratory illnesses, the unsafe use of cyanide and toxic chemicals, and contamination of water sources like the Mutevekwi River with heavy metals. Additionally, mining blasts have caused structural damage to homes. “.
We must remember that these violations are not just environmental; they are a direct assault on the community, “the CNRG stated. They emphasized that the Constitution is clear in its directive that natural resources should benefit the people, not harm them. The petitioners are urging the Parliament to exercise its oversight role over administrative bodies and ministries responsible for implementing mining development policies, managing the environment, and protecting public health and the environment.
The petition calls for an investigation into the reported violations, the enforcement of compliance with environmental and cultural protection laws by mining companies, the provision of compensation for affected households, the strengthening of regulation of artisanal mining, and the implementation of urgent measures to protect public health and the environment. The CNRG has highlighted that this petition is part of a broader campaign to ensure accountability, transparency, and justice in Zimbabwe’s extractive sector.
Boterekwa, an 8-kilometre winding pass located near Shurugwi, is both a scenic tourist attraction and a dangerous, heavily mined area. Known for its dramatic curves, steep mountains, and mining activity, it is a symbol of the complex relationship between natural resources and human well-being. The Centre for Natural Resource Governance, a civil society organization dedicated to promoting equitable and sustainable management of natural resources, is committed to defending the rights of communities affected by extractive industries. This case is a response to the myriad of rights violations faced by rural communities, including land and water grabbing, pollution, and direct violence.
