The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been actively engaged in Egypt for over a century, providing essential humanitarian protection and assistance to those affected by armed conflict and other violent situations. Since its establishment in Cairo in 1983, the ICRC has focused on several key areas of operation within the country.
In Egypt, the ICRC works to reunite families separated by conflict, violence, or migration, offering communication and tracing services to reconnect loved ones. It also serves as a critical operational hub, supporting responses to conflicts in neighboring regions such as Gaza and Sudan, in close collaboration with the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC). The organization promotes and advocates for International Humanitarian Law (IHL) among various stakeholders, including military and police officers, judges, diplomats, and academics, in coordination with the Egyptian National Committee on IHL (ENCIHL).
The ICRC engages in humanitarian diplomacy with a wide range of actors, including the diplomatic community, regional organizations like the League of Arab States and the African Union, and international organizations based in Egypt. It maintains a close partnership with the Egyptian Red Crescent, its primary humanitarian partner in Egypt, to address humanitarian needs and assist vulnerable populations both within Egypt and the broader region.
In 2025, the ICRC, in partnership with the ERC and other organizations, concentrated its efforts on supporting victims of armed conflicts in the region, enhancing emergency preparedness and response with the Egyptian Red Crescent, facilitating the reunion of families, and promoting awareness of IHL.
