JOHANNESBURG — South Africa is experiencing a significant increase in traffic volumes as the Easter long weekend commences. SAPS officers and traffic officials have set up roadblocks on national highways, including the N1, to manage the surge in vehicle traffic.
Transport Minister Barbara Creecy has been monitoring the situation, noting the heightened activity. She revealed that the N1 is expected to see over 2,500 vehicles an hour passing through toll gates, driven by both the Easter pilgrimage to Moria and travel to neighboring countries.
To address the increased traffic safely, Creecy confirmed that authorities have been fully mobilized. The deployment of national traffic officers ensures continuous visibility and enforcement around the clock. To maintain effective monitoring and rapid response, three shifts have been implemented.
Creecy emphasized that the road will now be patrolled 24/7 to enhance safety and ensure compliance with regulations throughout the Easter long weekend.
