In a coordinated effort to combat gang — related violence, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and the police have commenced a major crackdown on the Cape Flats area. The deployment, initially set for April, comes after numerous delays and following the loss of many lives. The Democratic Alliance (DA) has welcomed the operation but emphasizes the necessity of stringent oversight to ensure its effectiveness.
The SANDF, which has faced criticism for its management of military assets, has allocated R823 million for the operation. The army’s deployment in Cape Town is seen as a significant step in addressing the gang problem in the area. The DA has highlighted the importance of oversight, acknowledging the need for accountability and transparency in the process.
