Agadir, Morocco — Representing Morocco at the Fourteenth Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (MC14) held in Yaoundé, Cameroon from March 26 to 29, Foreign Trade Secretary Omar Hjira emphasized the nation’s commitment to aligning trade policies with environmental priorities. During a high-level meeting of the Trade Ministers’ Alliance for Climate, Hjira highlighted Morocco’s national strategy, aiming for a 45. 5% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and a significant increase in renewable energy capacity.
This strategy underscores Morocco’s transition towards a low-carbon economy, according to the ministry of industry and trade. Morocco further advocated for expanded trade in environmental products and services, reduced tariffs on green products, and the promotion of the circular economy to foster investment and technology transfer.
Hjira’s participation in the conference, which gathered thousands of participants and experts, aimed to showcase Morocco’s strategic orientations under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, particularly in innovation, technology, and global economic integration. Beyond policy declarations, Morocco engaged in a series of bilateral meetings to strengthen economic partnerships and explore trade opportunities. These included discussions with the New Zealand Minister of Trade and Investment, leading to agreements to enhance trade relations and arrange mutual economic missions.
The Moroccan Ministry of Trade and Industry noted that the conference provided opportunities to access support for the country’s Foreign Trade Program for 2025-2027, focusing on digitalization and the empowerment of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises. Morocco also sought to strengthen its relationships in Africa and other regions, engaging in negotiations with Ghana and Somalia to bolster bilateral cooperation. In Eastern Europe, a meeting with Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration resulted in an agreement to establish a joint technical committee to identify areas of cooperation and address trade imbalances.
These diplomatic engagements reflect Morocco’s strategy of diversifying its economic partners and solidifying its role in the international market.
Morocco’s active participation in the WTO Ministerial Conference underscores its commitment to sustainable development and global trade partnerships. The country’s efforts to align trade with environmental priorities and strengthen economic ties with various regions demonstrate its role as a leader in climate-conscious economic policy.
