MOUILA, Gabon — On March 27, 2026, the Director of Provincial Fisheries and Aquaculture, Camel Boundoukou Mangoumba, held a meeting in Mouila, the capital of Ngounié province in southern Gabon. The gathering aimed to sensitize fishermen from the Douya-Onoye department about regulations governing fishing permissions and legal equipment for their trade, as reported by the Gabonese Press Agency.
During the session, participants were informed about the penalties for failing to adhere to existing regulations, particularly concerning fishing permissions and legal equipment requirements. The director emphasized the importance of having adequate equipment, such as compliant pirogues and conservation equipment, to improve working conditions for fishermen. Fishmongers in attendance expressed a need for enhanced support in conservation and the marketing of fishery products.
In response, the provincial official encouraged all stakeholders to comply with regulations, highlighting the acquisition of a fishing permit priced at 50,000 FCFA and a fishing card costing 10,000 FCFA. The prices for fish with scales and without scales were set at 2,000 FCFA and 2,500 FCFA per kilogram, respectively. Despite ongoing efforts to regulate the sector, some actors continue to resist new provisions, thereby exposing themselves to potential sanctions under the current regulatory framework.
