Abuja, Nigeria — Nigeria and Saint Kitts and Nevis will each appoint a special envoy to lock in joint projects and widen links between Africa and the Caribbean, Prime Minister Terrance Drew said on Thursday.
Drew told reporters after meeting President Bola Tinubu at the State House that the reciprocal postings are meant to “ensure tangible benefits” for both countries and for the 15-member CARICOM group. “We have agreed that there will be a special envoy to Saint Kitts and Nevis, and of course we would have a special envoy here,” he.
The leaders reviewed existing cooperation in health and education, sectors in which Nigerian — trained doctors already work in the twin-island nation, and sketched future collaboration on food security, agriculture and cultural exchange. Drew noted that many Kittitians and Nevisians trace their ancestry to Nigeria’s Calabar region, calling the visit “a return home”.
The envoy plan marks a move from periodic visits to a permanent diplomatic channel meant to speed up follow — through on accords already signed between Abuja and Basseterre.
