Kisoro, Uganda — Kisoro Art Island, a cultural and artistic sanctuary on the shores of Lake Mutanda, was officially unveiled on 26 March 2026. This innovative retreat, co-founded by celebrated Ugandan artist Ruganzu Bruno, combines contemporary art with hospitality, aiming to stimulate sustainable economic growth in the Kisoro community.
Nestled in the scenic Virunga Mountains and adjacent to UNESCO — protected forests, the island offers visitors a gateway to the region’s renowned gorilla forests and volcanic landscapes. Bruno’s vision is to harness the power of art as a universal language to uplift communities and celebrate Uganda’s Afrofuturist spirit.
The island’s architecture reflects a blend of indigenous Ugandan styles and Afrofuturist design, with guest accommodations inspired by traditional calabashes and incorporating Barkcloth, an ancient textile. Local volcanic stone and reeds are used to ensure the retreat harmonizes with its natural surroundings.
Kisoro Art Island houses a permanent art collection curated by Bruno and his international network, featuring works by renowned artists such as Sanaa Gateja and Samuel Kortey Baah. The collection includes thought-provoking installations like Shrine’s “Rituals of Peace “sculptures, emphasizing environmental repair.
The retreat offers exclusive gorilla trekking expeditions and scenic boat trips, guided by experienced rangers from local ranger families. These intimate encounters ensure a respectful and safe experience for both visitors and wildlife. The island also supports local conservation and community projects, fostering economic sustainability.
