Johannesburg, South Africa — The South African civil rights organization AfriForum has called for the imposition of US sanctions against the country’s Minister of Police, Fikile Mbalula, on the heels of ongoing corruption allegations. The group is aiming to avert potential economic repercussions within South Africa.
According to AfriForum, the allegations pertain to Mbalula’s role in the awarding of contracts, which they believe constitutes corruption. The organization has submitted these claims to the US Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) in a bid to have Mbalula included in the sanctions list.
Responding to the allegations, Mbalula has not yet issued a comment. Meanwhile, South Africa’s government has voiced its concerns about the proposed sanctions, suggesting they could strain the country’s relationship with the United States. The government emphasizes its commitment to fighting corruption and working with stakeholders to uphold the rule of law.
AfriForum’s request for sanctions aligns with a series of similar actions targeting other South African officials. In 2021, the organization successfully advocated for sanctions against then-President Cyril Ramaphosa, which were lifted after his resignation.
As the situation unfolds, more information is anticipated regarding the potential sanctions against Mbalula and their implications for South Africa’s political and economic stability.
