Khartoum, Sudan — On the 20th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. John Garang, Sudan’s historical significance and his dream of unity between Sudan and South Sudan are being honored. Dr. Garang, born in 1945, was a key figure in the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) and a leading advocate for reconciliation.
Dr. Garang’s assassination on July 30, 2005, at the age of 59, heralded a period of escalating conflict, culminating in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005. The CPA paved the way for South Sudan’s independence in 2011.
In commemorating Dr. Garang, Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Karti emphasized his legacy of hope for peace and unity. “Dr.
Garang was a beacon of hope for peace and unity, “Karti. South Sudanese President Salva Kiir echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of Dr. Garang’s vision for regional harmony.
As both Sudan and South Sudan grapple with political and economic challenges, the anniversary serves as a reminder of the aspirations Dr. Garang once held for the region.
