Kenya: Floods Kill Dozens, Devastate Farmland. Kisumu, Kenya — Dozens of lives have been lost and vast tracts of farmland have been destroyed in Kisumu County, Kenya, following intense flooding, according to local reports.
The region has been addressing the adverse effects of climate change, which have been exacerbated by recent torrential rains.
The flash floods have killed over 80 people and caused significant damage to approximately 1,200 hectares of farmland, affecting the crop yields for the current season. More than 3,000 families in the Nyakach community have been displaced from their homes, with officials indicating that relief efforts are underway.
In a separate development, Mali has agreed to release several suspected jihadist fighters as part of an agreement to end the blockade that has been preventing fuel supplies from reaching the capital, Bamako.
This move is expected to provide some relief to Mali’s economy, which has been severely impacted by the fuel crisis.
A secure corridor is to be established until the end of May to facilitate the flow of fuel and other essential supplies.
In São Tomé and Príncipe, cocoa farmers have embarked on a project to restore forest cover, known as The Restoration Initiative.
Supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the project aims to enhance sustainable cocoa production practices.
