Gabon: Senate Establishes Six Provisional Permanent Committees. LIBREVILLE, Gabon — 17 March 2026 (AGP) – The Senate of Gabon has adopted and established six provisional permanent committees, tasked with organizing and overseeing legislative activities, during a plenary session chaired by its President, Huguette Yvonne Nyana-Ekoume Awori Onanga, according to the Gabonese Press Agency. These commissions, anticipated since the opening of the first ordinary session of 2026, are designed to enable senators to effectively initiate legislative activities within the Upper House of Parliament.
The establishment of these commissions follows an opinion issued by the Constitutional Court, which authorized the institution to rely, on a transitional basis, on the internal regulations of 2021 for its operation, pending the entry into force of the new regulatory framework of the 6th legislature.
The committees include: The Foreign Affairs and National Defense Commission, led by Pierre Rizogo Rousselot.
The Laws and Human Rights Commission, headed by Augustin N’Dong Mba.
The Finance, Budget, and Public Accounts Commission, chaired by Maryse Mariam Matsanga Mayila Isselmou.
The Planning, Development, Territorial Organization, Environment, and Decentralization Commission, led by Valentin Mboumba.
The Cultural, Social, and Communication Affairs Commission, headed by Jean Placide Owono Mbouengou.
The Economic, Production, and Trade Commission, chaired by Gabriel Zomo Ye Be.
The move comes as part of the Senate’s efforts to streamline its legislative process and ensure effective oversight, according to official statements.
The provisional nature of these committees suggests that they will serve as a temporary measure until the new legislative framework is fully implemented.
Further details regarding the specific functions and activities of these committees are expected to be released in the coming days. For now, the establishment of these committees marks a significant step in the Senate’s organizational structure and its role in the legislative process of Gabon.
