South African Men Allegedly Recruited for Ukraine Conflict Return Home. Johannesburg, South Africa — Eleven South African men, including one with a disability, returned to Durban from Ukraine on Wednesday, following reports that they were deceived into joining Russian forces in the ongoing conflict.
The men, who were trapped in the Donbas region since November, arrived amidst growing political controversy surrounding their recruitment.
According to reports, the men were initially sent to Russia under the guise of “security guard training “by the opposition MK Party, led by former president Jacob Zuma.
The MK Party’s founder, Jabulani Khumalo, expressed gratitude to the government for securing their return but demanded justice for those responsible for their recruitment.
The MK Party’s daughter, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, resigned from parliament over allegations of her involvement in the recruitment process.
Officials commented on the matter. “Ukrainian authorities have identified over 1,780 citizens from 36 African countries among Russian ranks.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed that investigations into the recruitment circumstances are ongoing.
Family members were emotional as they welcomed their loved ones at the airport, while the remaining two men, one of whom is hospitalized, continue to be in Russia.
The situation highlights the complexities of foreign recruitment and the potential risks faced by individuals who are misled into participating in conflicts abroad. Further details regarding the full scope of the investigation and any potential legal actions are expected in the coming days.
