Libreville, Gabon — 23 January 2026 (AGP) – The Gabonese education sector is facing a significant crisis, with the appointment of Jean Gaspard Ntoutoume Ayi, a deputy in the National Assembly, as a mediator to resolve the ongoing dispute.
A statement from the Gabonese press agency (AGP) revealed that President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguéma has designated Ayi to facilitate negotiations between the government and the SOS Education collective, which represents striking teachers.
The crisis, which has been ongoing for three weeks, has led to repeated strikes and disruptions of classes across the national educational system.
The government has initiated a tripartite commission, under the presidency of Vice — President Hermann Immongault, to facilitate dialogue between the authorities, syndicates, and the SOS Education collective.
According to gabonactu. Com, this commission aims to resolve the crisis and restore normalcy to the education sector.
The crisis has had a significant impact on students, affecting their academic progress and future prospects. Regional officials confirmed that the situation has raised concerns about the future of the education system in Gabon. Jean Gaspard Ntoutoume Ayi has already met with some members of the SOS Education collective, during which the representatives of the striking teachers discussed the causes of the conflict.
These include the absence of meaningful negotiations following the Alibandeng summit, unilateral actions by some movement founders, the intervention of Pierre Mintsa, and a tense discussion climate.
The mediator has proposed a process based on government budget transparency and prioritizing demands based on available financial resources.
The outcomes of this meeting are expected to be presented during an assembly scheduled for Saturday, January 24, at the Awendjé basketball court in Libreville, as well as in provincial academies across the country.
Further details are expected as the situation develops.
