Sudan: International Criminal Court Describes Darfur as Epicentre of Suffering. New York, United States — The International Criminal Court (ICC) has described the situation in Sudan’s Darfur region as an epicentre of profound suffering, highlighting a widening war between rival military forces that has led to organized campaigns of violence targeting civilians.
In a briefing to the United Nations Security Council, ICC Deputy Prosecutor Nazhat Shameem Khan detailed the escalating atrocities, including mass executions, rape, and ethnic targeting, which amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Khan emphasized that the scale of suffering and criminality in Darfur is “can only be addressed if we work together” and called for the government of Sudan to secure the arrest of those individuals subject to ICC arrest warrants. “The fall of al-Fasher to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has been accompanied by an organized, calculated campaign of the most profound suffering, targeting non-Arab communities in particular,” Khan.
“Rape, arbitrary detention, executions, mass graves, all perpetrated on a massive scale.
Many of these crimes have been filmed and celebrated by those committing them. ” The ICC has reasonable grounds to believe that both war crimes and crimes against humanity are being committed in Darfur, with systematic sexual violence being used as a weapon of war.
The situation has darkened further, with civilians subjected to collective torture amid the conflict.
Sudanese ambassador to the United Nations, Ammar Mohammed Mahmoud, responded to the allegations, stating that the “atrocities perpetrated by this militia” would not have occurred without outside assistance. Mahmoud called for the court’s investigations to extend to all those proven to have supported or colluded with the militia.
The United Nations has repeatedly warned of the involvement of foreign actors in both sides of Sudan’s civil war.
A report in September last year by the UN Human Rights Council accused both the military and the RSF of war crimes and human rights violations. Further details are expected as the situation in Darfur continues to unfold.
