Abidjan, Ivory Coast — Ivory Coast and the United States have inked a significant health agreement worth $487 million.
The deal is intended to fortify Ivory Coast’s health infrastructure and enhance its ability to prevent and combat diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis.
The agreement, which was officially signed, focuses on improving disease detection systems and expanding health services.
It also aligns with the United States’new global health strategy, emphasizing national ownership of health priorities.
According to Ivorian Prime Minister Beugre Mambe, the partnership aims to encourage countries to leverage domestic resources while collaborating with international partners on critical health challenges. Part of the funding will be allocated to bolster Ivory Coast’s readiness for epidemics, integrating U.
S.
-supported health programs into the national system. This approach is designed to ensure sustainability and improve coordination among public health services, officials stated.
U. S. Ambassador to Ivory Coast Jessica Davis Ba highlighted the partnership’s broader scope, emphasizing the importance of long-term cooperation.
She noted that progress in health is inextricably linked to investments in energy and infrastructure, underlining the centrality of collaboration in the shared vision for the future. Ivory Coast’s Minister of Health, Pierre Demba, stated that the agreement represents a shift towards greater national leadership in managing health funding. He pointed out that the state aims to gradually take over responsibility for external funding, allowing foreign support to be better integrated into national priorities.
The agreement is expected to transform Ivory Coast’s health sector over the next five years, significantly strengthening care and disease response across the nation. HIV/AIDS, with an estimated 420,000 people living with the virus last year, will be a major focus area. Further details regarding the implementation of the agreement and its impact on the ground are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
