Central African Republic on Verge of Quadruple Vote Amid Ongoing Challenges. Bangui, Central African Republic — The Central African Republic is set to hold a critical quadruple election on December 28, with voters electing their president, lawmakers, and local and municipal leaders.
The upcoming polls are seen as a pivotal moment for the country, which has been struggling to recover from decades of violence and instability.
According to the United Nations’ envoy for Central Africa, Abdou Abarry, the vote could mark a turning point for Bangui. “This is an opportunity to commend the remarkable recovery of the country, which is laying the foundations for peace consolidation among domestic actors and has undertaken measures to secure its borders, notably with Chad and Cameroon, “Abarry said during a UN Security Council meeting on Thursday. Despite these efforts, the Central African Republic continues to grapple with insecurity stemming from the civil war that erupted in 2012.
The Security Council established a stabilisation mission, MINUSCA, in 2014 to help restore peace.
However, armed groups are still perpetrating attacks across the country.
As of August 2025, nearly 665,000 Central Africans are refugees abroad, and over 440,000 are internally displaced, according to the UN refugee agency.
The UN has described the upcoming elections as a crucial opportunity to strengthen democratic governance, promote reconciliation, and consolidate stability.
The government has been working to ensure the polls are free and fair, but challenges remain, including the ongoing insecurity and the need to secure the country’s borders. Regional officials confirmed that the government is taking steps to address these challenges, but they also emphasized that the success of the elections will depend on the cooperation of all stakeholders.
Officials commented on the matter.
Further details regarding the preparations for the elections are expected in the coming days.
The government has not yet commented on any specific measures being taken to address the ongoing security concerns.
