MONROVIA, Liberia — A string of devastating fires swept across Liberia between 24 and 28 March 2026, engulfing five counties – Grand Cape Mount, River Cess, Margibi, Nimba, and Montserrado. The fires left 1,643 individuals from 234 households affected, with the destruction of 41 houses and partial damage to another 20.
These tragic incidents have displaced many families, who have lost their homes and essential belongings, including clothing, bedding, and cooking utensils. The aftermath has led to a significant disruption of livelihoods, forcing affected households to rely on the hospitality of host families and the strained resources of their communities.
The scale of the damage underscores the vulnerability of local housing structures in Liberia. It has also highlighted the critical need for improved fire prevention and preparedness measures at the community level to mitigate the impact of future fires. Paragraph: The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is actively responding to the crisis, providing emergency assistance to those affected. The organization’s efforts are focused on supporting the affected families and communities as they work to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of these fires.
