Kebbi State, Nigeria –
At least 25 students were abducted early Monday after armed men stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga town, Kebbi State, killing the vice principal in the process.
The attack took place around midnight in the Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area. Witnesses said the gunmen broke into the school compound and opened fire, killing Vice Principal Malam Hassan Makuku as he attempted to protect the students.
Police spokesperson CSP Nafiu Abubakar confirmed the abduction, stating that security forces had launched search and rescue operations. Kebbi’s Chief Press Secretary, Ahmed Idris, added that Deputy Governor Umar Tafida was dispatched to the scene to assess the situation on behalf of Governor Nasir Idris.
Residents described a night of terror marked by gunfire, panic, and mourning, with community members gathering to pray for the safe return of the girls and to honor the slain vice principal.
The incident adds to a troubling pattern of mass abductions targeting schools across northern Nigeria. In recent years, hundreds of students have been kidnapped in similar raids, including the abductions in Jangebe (2021), Kagara (2021), Kankara (2020), Dapchi (2018), and Chibok (2014), many of which drew international condemnation.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to track the attackers and recover the missing students.
