The Secretary — General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Véron Mosengo-Omba, resigned his position on Sunday in Cairo, Egypt, to focus on personal projects, according to a statement received by the Gabonese Press Agency. “After over 30 years of an international career dedicated to a football that unites, educates, and creates opportunities filled with hope, I have decided to leave my role as CAF Secretary-General to dedicate myself to more personal projects, “Mosengo-Omba stated in his resignation letter. “Now that I have been able to dispel the doubts that some have been trying to cast on me, I can retire calmly and without constraint, leaving behind a CAF as prosperous as ever, “he added.
Mosengo — Omba was affected by the age limit as of October 15th last year. Samson Adamu, the current CAF Director of Competitions, has been appointed as acting Secretary-General pending the appointment of a permanent successor.
The resignation of Mosengo — Omba, who has been a key figure in the African football landscape for decades, comes as a surprise to many. His departure has been attributed to his desire to pursue personal endeavors. During his tenure, Mosengo-Omba has been instrumental in the growth and development of African football, working tirelessly to promote the sport across the continent.
The CAF has faced various challenges over the years, including allegations of corruption and mismanagement. However, Mosengo-Omba’s resignation has been met with a sense of optimism, as many believe it is an opportunity for the organization to move forward and address these issues more effectively.
In his letter, Mosengo — Omba emphasized his commitment to leaving the CAF in a better position than when he joined. “I leave with a sense of pride and fulfillment, knowing that I have contributed to the growth and success of African football, “he wrote.
The appointment of Samson Adamu as acting Secretary — General is seen as a positive step, as Adamu has been a key figure in the CAF’s competition department for several years. His experience and understanding of the organization’s operations are expected to help stabilize the organization during this transition period.
As the search for a permanent Secretary — General begins, the CAF will be looking for someone with a strong vision and the ability to lead the organization into a new era of growth and development.
