Kampala, Uganda – Former Ugandan presidential candidate Kizza Besigye has been charged with treason, following his reported abduction from Kenya and detention in Uganda, according to The Monitor newspaper.

Besigye, alongside his aide Obeid Lutale and Ugandan military officer Denis Oola, appeared before a court in Kampala, where they were formally accused of plotting to overthrow the Ugandan government. Reports indicate that in November 2024, Besigye was taken into custody by a military court, facing allegations of planning an attack on the Ugandan army and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

His wife, Winnie Byanyima, previously stated that he was abducted in Kenya and subsequently transferred to a military prison in Kampala. The opposition leader has been a key political figure in Uganda, having run for president in 2001, 2006, 2011, and 2016, frequently challenging the administration of President Yoweri Museveni.
