Johannesburg, South Africa –
Authorities are investigating a deadly shooting at Inxiweni Primary School in Tembisa, where the principal and an administrative staff member were killed inside the school’s administration block late Tuesday afternoon.
The attack occurred shortly after 5 p.m. as staff were preparing for an upcoming meeting. Colleagues in a nearby office reported hearing multiple gunshots and took cover. When they emerged, they found the 58-year-old principal and a 55-year-old administrator lying in the corridor.
Emergency responders arrived swiftly, but both victims were declared dead at the scene.
Police have opened a murder investigation, though no arrests had been made as of Wednesday. The motive for the killings remains unclear.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, joined by Education MEC Matome Chiloane, visited the school to meet with officials and the grieving families.
The Gauteng Department of Education said counselling teams and wellness personnel have been deployed to support teachers and learners affected by the tragedy. Chiloane condemned the killings as a shocking act of violence in a space meant to be safe for children and educators, urging police to move quickly to apprehend those responsible.
