Dakar, Senegal – In a powerful gesture of compassion and national unity, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has granted a presidential pardon to 1,466 inmates ahead of the Tabaski (Eid al-Adha) celebrations. The move underscores Senegal’s enduring commitment to justice, mercy, and social reintegration within its republican values.
According to the presidential press office, the clemency was extended to prisoners who met specific humanitarian and legal criteria, including:
- 🟠 First-time offenders
- 🟠 Prisoners showing evidence of rehabilitation
- 🟠 Elderly or seriously ill individuals
The pardoned individuals will now have the opportunity to reunite with their families and reintegrate into society, aligning with the spirit of Tabaski, a festival rooted in sacrifice, forgiveness, and renewal.
President Faye’s action reflects not only the values of the Islamic holiday but also a progressive approach to justice, emphasizing redemption and second chances over punitive isolation.
Human rights organizations and faith leaders across Senegal have widely praised the decision, noting its role in strengthening national cohesion and offering hope to families affected by incarceration.
