Sudan’s Army Chief Reshuffles Cabinet, Appoints New Acting Foreign Minister

Since April 2023, a conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the rebel paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has raged across Sudan, with the capital Khartoum at the epicenter of the fighting. According to the UN, tens of thousands of people have been killed and more than 11 million displaced.

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Sudan’s army chief and head of the ruling Transitional Sovereignty Council, has made changes to the cabinet, appointing a new acting foreign minister.

In a statement released Sunday, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s office announced that Hussein Awad Ali had been relieved of his duties as Sudan’s foreign minister, with Ali Youssef Ahmed taking over the position.

The new foreign minister, Ambassador Ali Youssef Ahmed, brings a wealth of experience to the role. He has served in the Sudanese Foreign Service for over five decades, holding prominent positions including Sudan’s Ambassador to the European Union in Brussels, Ambassador to China, and Ambassador to South Africa.

In addition to the appointment of the new foreign minister, the decree signed by al-Burhan also included changes to the Ministry of Trade and Supply, the Ministry of Culture and Information, and the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Endowments.
