Washington D.C., United States – A high-level South African delegation has concluded meetings with senior US officials in an effort to mend strained diplomatic relations and address concerns over the country’s land expropriation policy.
Led by G20 sherpa and Director-General of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), Zane Dangor, the delegation engaged with representatives from the US National Security Council, State Department, and Treasury to clarify South Africa’s position.
The discussions centered on South Africa’s land reform policies, which have faced criticism from the US government, particularly during the Trump administration, over concerns related to minority rights and property laws. US officials also raised concerns about South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
South African representatives, however, emphasized that the land reform policy is aimed at redressing historical injustices stemming from apartheid-era dispossession and is not intended to facilitate unlawful land seizures.
In a statement, DIRCO expressed satisfaction that key misconceptions had been addressed, particularly those fueled by lobby groups advocating for white minority interests in the US. The department reiterated that South Africa remains committed to land reform in a lawful and just manner, while also ensuring that its policies are accurately represented in international discussions.
