Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Syria’s interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa, describing the recent victory of pro-presidential forces in Syria as “a great success and a step toward the consolidation of Syrian society.”
During the meeting, held in Moscow on Wednesday, Putin emphasized that relations between Russia and Syria have always been “exclusively friendly,” reaffirming Moscow’s continued commitment to supporting Syria’s stability and reconstruction efforts.
Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa expressed his gratitude to the Russian leader for the warm reception and praised Russia’s significant role in Syria’s development and recovery. He stated that the new Syrian authorities intend to relaunch and deepen bilateral relations, highlighting the “historical ties” that have long bound the two nations.
According to the Kremlin, discussions also included the status of Russian military bases in Syria, as well as cooperation in political, economic, and humanitarian sectors. Kremlin spokespersons described the talks as marking “an important day for Russian-Syrian relations.”
Al-Sharaa affirmed that Syria continues to rely on Russia’s achievements in various fields, viewing Moscow as an essential partner in building a “new, unified Syria.”
