Addis Ababa, Ethiopia –
Melaku Mulualem, Director General of Training at the Institute of Foreign Affairs, has called for regional unity and cooperation over Africa’s shared natural resources, emphasizing pan-African solidarity rather than conflict.
Speaking on the sidelines of a training session for foreign diplomats in Addis Ababa, Mulualem highlighted the Nile River as a prime example of a transboundary resource that should bind nations together, not divide them.
“The Nile is not just Ethiopia’s, Egypt’s, or Sudan’s alone,” he said in an interview with Sputnik Africa, urging collective benefit and shared stewardship.
Mulualem also stressed the need to revisit colonial-era water agreements, which he argued no longer reflect the realities or aspirations of modern Africa. He called for a new, inclusive framework that respects the rights and needs of all Nile Basin countries.
In a broader geopolitical context, the Ethiopian official linked Ethiopia’s membership in BRICS to its historic commitment to Pan-African advocacy, saying:
“Our participation in BRICS is not just about Ethiopia — it’s about amplifying Africa’s voice globally and ensuring South-South cooperation in addressing shared development challenges.”
Mulualem’s remarks underscore Ethiopia’s long-standing diplomatic engagement in African unity, a legacy that continues to shape its international alliances.
