Antananarivo, Madagascar –
The Madagascar Armed Forces have declared they are assuming control of the government following the impeachment of the country’s president, marking a significant political shift in the island nation’s leadership.
According to press reports, the announcement was delivered from the Ambotsirohitra Palace, the official presidential residence in Antananarivo. The CAPSAT military unit outlined a series of measures it intends to implement during the transition period:
- Dissolution of all government bodies except the National Assembly;
- Abolition of the current Constitution, with a referendum planned for a new charter;
- Appointment of a new prime minister to form a transitional government;
- A transition period lasting up to two years before a return to civilian rule.
The situation remains tense as citizens and international observers await further clarification on how the transition will proceed and whether the National Assembly will maintain legislative continuity during the interim phase.
