Libreville, Gabon –
President Brice Oligui Nguema’s party, the Democratic Union of Builders (UDB), has secured a parliamentary majority, according to results released following the second round of voting on Saturday.
The UDB is projected to win 55 of the 145 seats in Gabon’s National Assembly, giving the ruling party a strong mandate to govern after a closely watched legislative contest.
The run-off vote took place in 77 constituencies where no candidate had won an outright majority in the first round, the national electoral body confirmed.
PDG Faces Major Setback
The main opposition, the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG) — once led by former President Ali Bongo Ondimba — secured only three seats in the first round, marking a steep decline in influence after decades of dominance.
Consolidating Post-Coup Transition
The victory represents a significant political boost for President Nguema, who won the April 2025 presidential election, formally concluding the country’s transition period that began after his August 2023 coup ended the 55-year Bongo family rule.
Nguema, a former head of the Republican Guard, has pledged to lead Gabon toward democratic stability and economic recovery, emphasizing good governance and anti-corruption reforms in the post-Bongo era.
