At the end of 2023, Chad’s Supreme Court approved a new constitution that provides for the creation of a Fifth Republic and the holding of general elections to return the country to civilian rule.
May 6 is the day of the first round of Chad’s presidential elections. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, a second round will be held.
A total of 10 candidates are running for the top job in the first round, including General Mahamat Idriss Déby, the country’s President of the Transition, and Succès Masra, Chad’s Head of Government and former opposition leader, as well as Albert Pahimi Padacké, the nation’s former Prime Minister, and Lydie Beassemda, the only female candidate.
