Khartoum, Sudan — In a harrowing revelation, Amnesty International has demanded a thorough investigation into the alleged war crimes committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) during their assault on the Zamzam camp in North Darfur State, Sudan. The camp, a sanctuary for internally displaced persons (IDPs), was subjected to a brutal military campaign in April 2025, which has left a trail of destruction and despair.
The Zamzam camp, the largest of its kind in North Darfur, bore the brunt of the RSF’s offensive aimed at capturing El Fasher, the region’s capital. According to a comprehensive report by Amnesty International, the RSF’s actions between April 11 and 13, 2025, were marked by the use of explosive weapons and untargeted firing in densely populated areas, resulting in numerous civilian casualties.
Amnesty International’s allegations are severe, with the organization accusing the RSF of intentionally targeting civilians, abducting hostages, pillaging, and destroying essential infrastructure such as mosques, schools, and health clinics. These actions, the report states, are in clear violation of international humanitarian law and warrant an immediate investigation into war crimes.
Eyewitness accounts paint a grim picture of the violence that unfolded. It is reported that 47 civilians, including those seeking refuge in a mosque and a clinic, were shot and killed by RSF fighters. The attack also forced approximately 400,000 people to flee the camp within a single day, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation in the region.
The Zamzam camp attack is not an isolated incident. It is part of a broader conflict that has engulfed Sudan since April 2023, when the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF clashed, leading to tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of over 12 million people. This ongoing conflict has raised concerns about the protection of civilians and the rule of law in Sudan.
Agnès Callamard, Secretary-General of Amnesty International, expressed deep concern over the RSF’s disregard for human life, describing the Zamzam camp attack as a “horrific and deliberate assault on desperate, hungry civilians.” The organization is calling on the RSF to cease all attacks on civilians and to allow unhindered access to humanitarian aid for those in need.
The international community, including neighboring African nations and global human rights organizations, must act swiftly to address the crisis in Sudan. The Zamzam camp attack serves as a stark reminder of the urgency of this matter and the need for a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the alleged war crimes committed by the RSF.
