38th AU Summit Pushes for Reparations and African Sovereignty
The 38th African Union (AU) Summit focuses on advancing the 2022 Resolution on Africa’s Reparations Agenda by the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. The initiative seeks to address historical injustices related to colonialism, slavery, and apartheid, fostering healing, justice, and recognition of African contributions.
Speaking to Sputnik Africa, Kenyan Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Musalia Mudavadi emphasized Africa’s need to assert its independence and determine its own future.
“Africa must now be treated appropriately. […] And going forward, Africa must take full control of its own destiny,” Mudavadi stated, pointing to the continent’s youthful population of 1.4 billion people.
He stressed the importance of greater regional integration, increased intra-African trade, and self-reliance in handling peace and security challenges. According to Sputnik Africa, Mudavadi believes the summit is critical for ensuring strong leadership that can guide Africa toward true sovereignty and economic empowerment, free from colonial and neocolonial influences.
Additionally, Mudavadi urged Russia to support Africa’s push for greater representation in global governance, particularly in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
“With 28% of the world’s countries, Africa remains excluded from permanent membership in the Security Council,” he told Sputnik Africa.
He highlighted Russia’s role as a permanent UNSC member and called on Moscow to advocate for Africa’s demand for two permanent UNSC seats, a position collectively backed by the continent’s 55 nations.
